Overview
The Office of Undergraduate Research (UGR) is a gateway for information and policies related to undergraduate research experiences. UGR collects and distributes campus policies that impact NSF-REU summer programs as well as other non-NSF undergraduate research experiences, and provides limited support to colleges, departments, and other units that coordinate programs for undergraduate researchers.

Faculty and staff involved in summer undergraduate research experiences are invited to attend our annual coordination meeting to learn about university-level policies for externally- and internally-funded summer undergraduate research programs.
Topics discussed at the meeting include:
- Admitting and enrolling students
- Tuition, fees, and waivers
- Scholarship stipend payments
- Housing, meal plans, and health services
- Student training and other activities
Student Training
NEW University SAP 15.99.99.M0.04, Responsible Conduct for Research was recently approved. This SAP establishes University requirements for the training of students and postdoctoral researchers involved in University-related research, regardless of funding.
Those who will be impacted include:
- Undergraduate students: any undergraduate student who participates in research must complete online RCR training within 60 days from their initial involvement in the research activity.
- Graduate students: depending on the type of research activity, graduate students must complete online RCR training within 60 days from commencement of the research activity and four hours of face-to-face training within the first six months of involvement with externally funded research.
- Postdoctoral researchers: all must complete online RCR training within 60 days of employment, and complete an additional four hours of fact-to-face training within the first six months of employment.

Undergraduate Research Student Responsibilities
Trainings to complete:
• Required Introduction to Laboratory Safety Training (online – course #2114106)
• Required Hazard Communication Training (online – course #11020)
• Required if Working Safely with Cryogenics (online – course #211228)
• Required Work Area Specific Training – This training is to be completed based on the location and hazards specific to the location where work will take place. This training is provided by the Principle Investigator/Sponsor or the by the person to whom this task is delegated to by the Principle Investigator/Sponsor.
Students can access these required trainings through the External Gateway A username and password is required to access the External Gateway. This username and password will be distributed to REU-SURE students.
The Radiological Safety program at Texas A&M University exists to protect employees, students, and visitors as well as the public and the environment from the harmful effects of exposure to ionizing and non-ionizing radiations. Radiological Safety is responsible for developing and implementing the policies and procedures of the radiological safety program. Radiological Safety Staff (RSS) manages all aspects of the safe use of radioactive material (RAM), radiation producing devices (RPD) and lasers. RSS accomplishes this by providing several types of training, inventory of sources and machines, radioactive waste pickups, calibration services, personnel dosimetry to monitor radiation exposure, as well as technical support for all radiation safety concerns. The program ensures that the sources of ionizing and non-radiation are used in compliance with applicable federal and state regulations and with institutional licenses.
The Title IX Office will present information about Title IX at Texas A&M University. Title IX is a federal law that prohibits sexual harassment, sexual violence, and discrimination on the basis of sex.
This workshop is open to undergraduates participating in REU and summer undergraduate research programs. A valid UIN is required to attend this training. See the Summer Activities for Undergraduate Researchers Schedule for registration details.

You can learn more about Title IX at Texas A&M University here: https://titleix.tamu.edu/The office of Research Compliance and Biosafety (RCB) is responsible for providing training and support to faculty, students, and staff in regulatory requirements for research. RCB provides administrative and operational support for Texas A&M’s research compliance review committees as well as other research compliance programs designated at the university.
Projects may require approval through RCB committees if they involve:
- Human Subjects: Institutional Review Board (IRB)
- Vertebrate Animals: Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)
- Biohazards: Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC)
Note: Please be aware that projects involving social media and/or online content may be subject to review by the Institutional Review Board (IRB).
Students and faculty advisors should have a conversation very early on in the design of their summer research projects to determine whether or not the project may require approval from any of the three research compliance committees.
